KIMBER, Edward George (Ted)

29 March 1935 - 9 August 2016

Ted was born and raised in Brighton,England. After school he worked for the Ministry of Supply before and after his National Service in the RAF, where he was involved in weapon testing. He took courses in Mechanical Engineering and got a job in the drawing office of Kearney & Trecker - CVA. It was during this time that he met and married "Bitten" Clark (born: Edith Sorensen). He was soon put up for a scholarship in machine tool technology at UMIST in Manchester. Being successful in his first year, he was encouraged to take a second year, ending with a M.Sc., with which he returned to K&T - CVA, only to find that the company's drawing was being done overseas. At a bit of a loose end, he and Bitten went with two other couples to a seminar on working in Canada, and in 1970 the Smiths, Gallaghers and Kimbers arrived in Ontario, Ted working on designing Hovercraft skirts, and becoming called "Ed". Ed & Bitten were in Caledonia when Ed took a job with Tridon, Burlington, designing windshield wiper blades, where he found that the design of "a piece of rubber on a stick" was more complex and interesting than he first thought. Trips taken to Paris and Germany for in-car testing, and to Taiwan and Korea added some spice to his job. They then lived in Cayuga and Carlisle before moving to Burlington in 1985. Tridon had relocated, so Ed started his own consulting business and "managed to make a decent living." Ed played golf regularly and was a big jazz fan, accumulating an extensive and varied collection, and he enjoyed gardening, an interest inherited from his father. When Bitten died in 2010, he lived alone for a while until dementia made life increasingly difficult. He moved to Sunrise Senior Living in 2012 but with time it was clear he needed more attention. After a short stay at Joe Brant Hospital, he moved earlier this year to CAMA Woodlands LTC home, where he continued to entertain. All thanks to Dr. Harpal Singh, the staff at Sunrise, the staff on 2N at JB Hospital, and finally those who helped him through his last months; Aida, Peggy, Shirlea and Bartimaeus care-givers, and staff at CAMA. Ted had a small family in Canada; stepson Allan Clark and wife Wendy, who tookparticular care of her father-in-law, and his beloved step-grandson Jonathan. In England he is survived by sister Dorothy, niece Lynne (Phil) Miles and cousins, especially Peter Francis (Dot) and John Kimber (Deana). A memorial will be held at DODSWORTH & BROWN FUNERAL HOME, BURLINGTON CHAPEL, 2241 New Street (at Drury Lane), Burlington, 905-637-5233 on Tuesday, August 16th from 4-6 p.m., and later at the Coach & Four, Oakville.Donations in lieu of flowers to Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton.
